Wine is competing for occasions, not drinkers

2026-09-01

Trade visitors listen to a guide among vineyard rows; no wine product is visible.

A winery can have a credible origin story, a good importer and a carefully built price list, yet still lose the sale before the buyer compares wines. The occasion has gone somewhere else.

Wine Australia’s market bulletin of 26 August says mature markets are seeing lower consumption, more health-conscious behaviour and stronger competition from RTDs, spirits, alcohol-free drinks and cocktails. Its useful observation is not that consumers are leaving wine altogether. They increasingly choose a drink for a particular moment rather than from loyalty to a category.

That changes the export brief for Spanish wineries. “Premium Spanish wine” is not an occasion. A relaxed restaurant dinner, an aperitivo, a celebratory sparkling moment, a shared meal at home or a low-commitment by-the-glass choice can be. If a buyer cannot see where a reference fits, a good wine can remain unlisted.

A second signal arrived on 31 August. Women For WineSense launched a free Wine and Health educational resource covering cancer risk, sugar, heart health and moderation. It is an industry initiative, not medical advice. Its launch nevertheless reflects a practical fact: health questions are now part of the buying conversation. Silence, defensive messaging or vague wellness claims do not answer them.

What this means for an export winery

The question is no longer only “why is this wine good?” A buyer needs an answer to “when would someone choose it?” That answer has to work across the wine, price, serve, food context and channel.

This is not a call to invent occasions or turn every label into lifestyle advertising. A premium position becomes more credible when the occasion is specific. A restaurant might need a food-friendly glass-pour with a reliable service story. A specialist retailer may need a dinner-table recommendation that staff can explain in a sentence. An importer may need a reference that fits a defined account set rather than a vague country strategy.

For a Spanish winery, that focus can reduce a familiar mistake: presenting the whole range to every channel and allowing the buyer to decide the proposition. The buyer can still say no. But the commercial discussion is clearer, and the winery learns why.

Three practical decisions

Choose one lead occasion per reference

Define the customer, venue, serving moment and intended list or retail position for each lead SKU. Not every reference needs to serve every channel. A focused brief is easier for an importer to assess than a broad portfolio claim.

Give the importer a usable answer on health and moderation

Keep it factual and compliant: alcohol information, serving size, ingredients and certifications only when verified. Do not make unsupported health claims. The aim is to help a professional answer legitimate questions without changing the wine into a wellness product.

Measure occasion-level proof

Agree which accounts, menus, events or promotions will test the proposition; what an acceptable result looks like; and when the result will be reviewed. Requests for a second meeting, samples, a menu placement, reorder evidence or a buyer introduction are distinct signals. They should not be collapsed into “interest”.

Facts, inference and recommendation

Facts. Wine Australia identifies changing occasions, moderation and greater category competition as structural market conditions. Women For WineSense launched an educational wine-and-health resource on 31 August.

Inference. A buyer will increasingly need a sharper answer to “when would someone choose this?” than to a general statement about quality. This does not prove demand for any particular Spanish wine.

Recommendation. Build each export presentation around a limited number of specific occasions, then test whether product, price, food pairing, service and channel material support the same occasion.

The measurable task this week is to choose one lead SKU, write its occasion brief in five lines, and ask three target accounts whether the proposed moment fits their customer. That turns a category trend into evidence. Request an AI export diagnosis.
